South Africa Safari Packages: The Big Five, Organized

South Africa safari packages bundle the game drives, lodges, internal flights, and guides that a safari genuinely requires, and the best ones pair Kruger National Park with Cape Town so you get the Big Five and one of the world's most beautiful cities in a single trip. My hosted 2027 group departure, Majestic South Africa and Victoria Falls, does exactly that, and adds the falls themselves: Johannesburg and Soweto, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Kruger game drives, and Cape Town.

What a Safari Day Is Actually Like
A safari runs on the animals' schedule, which means two game drives a day bracketing the heat. You wake before dawn, grab coffee, and roll out of the lodge in an open 4x4 as first light hits the bush; this is when predators are still moving, and the sightings, a lion pride settling after a night's hunt, elephants crossing in gold light, are the ones you came for. Mid-morning you return to the lodge for a big breakfast and the day's long pause: pool, veranda, a guided bush walk if you want one, or a nap you will not apologize for. The afternoon drive leaves as the heat breaks and runs into dusk, often pausing for sundowners, drinks poured on the hood of the truck in the middle of the wilderness, before spotlighting nocturnal animals on the way back. Dinner on my 2027 itinerary includes a boma night, a traditional open-air feast under the stars, and you fall asleep to a soundtrack of the bush. The rangers and trackers make the trip: they read tracks, radio each other on sightings, and answer every question. The Big Five, lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo, are the famous checklist, and Kruger is one of the best places on earth to complete it, though no honest guide promises it.
Beyond the Bush: Victoria Falls and Cape Town
What makes this itinerary more than a safari is everything wrapped around it. It opens in Johannesburg with a day that grounds the whole trip: Constitution Hill, the former prison where Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were both held, and Soweto's Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world that was home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Then a flight to Zimbabwe for Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, called Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke That Thunders. A guided walk follows rainforest trails past the Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and Rainbow Falls viewpoints, with the mist on your face telling you why the name fits; optional extras include a helicopter flight over the gorge and a sunset cruise on the Zambezi with hippos for company. After Kruger, the trip finishes with three nights in Cape Town: the Cape Peninsula day along Chapman's Peak Drive to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, the African penguin colony at Boulders Beach, a Winelands day tasting through Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and, weather permitting, the cable car up Table Mountain with the city and Robben Island laid out below. Few trips anywhere stack this many once-in-a-lifetime sights into one itinerary.
When to Go for Wildlife
Safari timing has a clear answer and some useful nuance. The dry southern-hemisphere winter, May through September, is prime game-viewing season in Kruger: the bush thins out, water concentrates animals at rivers and waterholes, days are mild and sunny, and mosquitoes, this is malaria-area country, are at their lowest ebb. July and August sit at the heart of that window. The nuance is that South Africa's regions peak at different times. Cape Town's glorious beach-weather summer runs November through March, exactly opposite the safari sweet spot, and the Cape gets its rain in winter. Victoria Falls adds a third clock: the falls thunder at maximum volume after the rains, roughly February through May, and thin out by late dry season, when the trade-off is better visibility into the gorge and prime river conditions. So every combined itinerary balances three calendars, and the shoulder months, April-May and September-October, treat the whole route most evenly. Practical notes regardless of month: Kruger and the falls are malaria-risk areas, so talk to your doctor about prophylaxis; winter mornings in an open safari vehicle are genuinely cold, so pack layers you can shed by ten; and South Africa's seasons are upside down from ours, which surprises more packers than it should. What It Costs and What Is Included
Safari trips carry real costs, and the structure of this package keeps them predictable. The 2027 itinerary includes international round-trip airfare from New York, with other departure cities priced on request, ten nights of accommodation on twin sharing in superior and deluxe hotels and a safari lodge, daily breakfast plus one lunch and two dinners, all four internal flights the route requires, airport transfers, an English-speaking guide for all sightseeing, conservation and park fees for Kruger and Victoria Falls, and the headline touring: the Johannesburg and Soweto day, the guided falls walk, morning and evening Kruger game drives, the full Cape Peninsula day, the Winelands day with tastings, and the Table Mountain cable car, weather permitting. Not included: most lunches and dinners, gratuities for guides and drivers, visa fees, travel insurance, and personal spending. The booking structure is firm and worth knowing upfront: a $750 per person non-refundable deposit holds your place, 50% is due 145 days before departure, and the balance 90 days out, with cancellation penalties stepping up at those same marks. [NEEDS-CHRISTINE: full package price pp dbl for 2027.] For a trip covering three countries, four flights, and a safari lodge, the bundled structure is also the economical path; assembling the same route independently costs more and risks more.
Who This Trip Suits
This trip suits travelers for whom a safari has always been the someday trip, and who want the rest of southern Africa's highlights folded in rather than a bush-only week. It is a strong fit for couples marking a milestone, an anniversary, a retirement, a big birthday, because it feels unrepeatable in the best way. Solo travelers are welcome and common on my group departures; note the single-supplement rule in the fine print, which I will explain plainly, and ask me about roommate matching. Photographers should bring the long lens and will fill every card. Travelers who care about history get Johannesburg and Soweto handled with the seriousness they deserve, not as a drive-by. Physically, the trip is gentler than people expect: game drives are seated, the falls walk is level rainforest trail, and the strenuous options, gorge swings, hikes up Table Mountain instead of the cable car, are all optional. Who should think twice? Travelers who cannot do early mornings, because dawn drives are the beating heart of a safari, and anyone unwilling to take malaria precautions seriously. And if your dream is a private luxury safari lodge with no itinerary at all, that is a different, costlier trip, which I also book. For everyone else, this is the most trip per day I offer anywhere on earth.

South Africa Safari Packages: The Big Five, Organized: Questions People Ask
No visa is required for US tourists staying up to 90 days as of late 2026; you need a passport with blank pages and six months validity. The Victoria Falls portion is in Zimbabwe, which issues visas on arrival for a fee. I confirm current rules for both before departure.
Kruger is one of the best places on earth to try, and the itinerary includes multiple morning and evening game drives with professional rangers, which maximizes your odds. No honest operator guarantees wildlife; leopard and rhino are the usual holdouts, and the hunt is part of the joy.
Game drives with licensed rangers follow strict protocols and have an excellent safety record. Kruger and Victoria Falls are malaria-risk areas, so talk to your doctor or a travel clinic about prophylaxis before the trip; it is a routine, manageable precaution.
A $750 per person deposit, which is non-refundable, holds your spot; 50% is due 145 days before departure and the balance 90 days out, with payments at your own pace between those marks. I track the schedule for you so no deadline sneaks up.
